What government electric van grants are available?

As the world shifts toward more sustainable transport, the UK government has introduced a scheme to encourage people to swap to electric vans. The goal is to reduce emissions and combat climate change.

Amongst these efforts are electric van grants that are aimed at incentivising businesses to transition to electric vehicles. The goal of these grants is to help reduce any upfront costs and ultimately contribute to a greener future.

Types of Electric van grants

There are three types of electric van lease grants - small, large and trucks. Find out more about the different types below.

Small van grant

Small businesses and fleet operators looking to electrify their operations can benefit from the small van grant. This grant applies to vans with small cargo capacities. Vehicles need to be less than 2500 kg in weight, have CO2 emissions less than 50g/km, and be able to travel 60 miles without emissions.

Eligible vehicles include the Peugeot e-Partner and the Nissan Townstar. The grant will pay for 35% of the purchase price for small vans, up to a maximum of £2,500.

Large van grant

The large van grant is designed for businesses with heavier operational demands, supporting the adoption of larger electric vans with greater specs. The grant will pay for 35% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to a maximum of £5,000.

There are a few restrictions including a cap of 4,250kg in weight, less than 50g/km of C02 emissions and being able to travel at least 96 km without emissions. Some of the eligible large vans include the Citroen e-Dispatch and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo Commerce.

Truck grants

Beyond vans, the government has also included a series of grants for trucks. The truck grant has been designed to incentivise businesses to swap over to electric vehicles, especially in transport, construction and logistics. Electric trucks are quickly becoming a possibility due to advancements in battery technology.

What's the process for taking out an electric van grant?

If you think taking out a grant for an electric vehicle might be for you, you should know the process is simple. However, there are some materials you’ll need to prepare. By understanding the steps involved, you will streamline the process and make it simple.

1. Check your eligibility

The first thing to do is check your eligibility. The criteria involve making sure the van you are looking for is part of the scheme.

2. Contact dealers or suppliers

From here, you need to reach out to an approved car dealership, leasing company or supplier like Leasing Options. They will be able to give you more information about the application process regarding your grant.

3. Gather documents

You’ll need to get all of the necessary information and documentation. This can include business information, vehicle specifications and your proof of eligibility.

4. Submit and await confirmation

Once you have everything lined up, all you need to do is submit your application. From here, you will need to wait for confirmation and approval from both government and dealership parties.

5. Receive your grant funding

Once your application has been approved, you will get confirmation of your grant funding. The funds will be released to you, according to the terms and conditions of your grant agreement. The grant will likely be released to the dealership or supplier that you are purchasing the vehicle from.

Don’t worry. Leasing Options will be there to help you with each stage and take the effort out of your electric van grant.

Why should I take out an electric van lease grant?

Taking out an electric van lease grant can lessen the initial cost of your lease and make an electric vehicle a practical option. Since one of the reasons why getting a van lease over purchasing a vehicle outright is to reduce and spread the cost, this grant can make the idea of leasing an electric van even more appealing.

Let's take a look at the main benefits of an electric van grant, as well as some considerations for you to keep in mind.

Benefits of the electric van grant

  • It can help to reduce the upfront cost, which is often the most challenging part of getting a new vehicle
  • It allows you to switch to a greener/less polluting vehicle
  • It allows you to afford a vehicle that would have otherwise been too costly

Considerations of an electric van grant

  • Only some electric vehicles are eligible for the van grant
  • You will have to invest some time to apply for the grant

Does the electric van grant affect leasing?

Grants are available for leased vans. We take into consideration all the grants available and apply them to the price shown on the site. An electric vehicle that might have been out of reach financially for your business needs, may now be in reach with grants when compared to a non-electric vehicle.

Can I get a plug-in van grant for hybrid vans?

As well as the grant for fully electric vehicles, you can also get plug-in van grants for hybrid vans. This scheme extends to some low-emission vehicles and is designed – as with fully-electric vehicles – to help people afford them.

Can I get a grant for an electric van charger?

As well as grants for electric vehicles, there are also grants for electric vehicle charge points and infrastructure. There are several grants for those who own electric vans and are looking to get a charge point installed. Some of these grants include:

  • Charge point grant for renters.
  • Charge point and infrastructure grants for business staff.
  • Charge point and infrastructure grants for landlords.

There is also a scheme called the Workplace Charging Scheme, which offers support to eligible applicants who are looking to purchase and install electric vehicle charge points.
